About Ocala

Ocala is considered the undisputed place to breed, raise, and train horses, and it’s renowned for its thoroughbreds. There are a lot of reasons why it’s known as Horse Capital of the World®; for starters, one is the literal earth. Central Florida, and Marion County in particular, is rich with limestone – which gives the soil a goldmine of nutrients that make it ideal for agriculture. That, in turn, gives our horses a healthy, robust diet of good, natural food; most other breeders have to add supplements in their feed to achieve the same results. Plus there’s a thick layer of clay underneath the topsoil that holds moisture and helps enrich the already fertile soil. Marion County is alive with the green of growing things, and the blue of clean water.

Equestrian Excellence

Iconic horse farms and facilities like Tamarian Farms have thrived here for generations, developing and growing over decades and creating Ocala’s reputation as a hub of unsurpassed expertise in the equestrian industry.  Many of these farms have produced horses that have consistently won top racing and competitive events, as well as equally impressive offspring of legendary horses who continue the line of champions. Check out the Kentucky Derby each year, and you’re bound to find multiple horses who have been born, raised, or trained here – many of which go on to compete in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

Infrastructure Hub

Unquestionably, Ocala’s gorgeous climate and pastoral environment have been integral to our equestrian successes, and that led to an entire infrastructure that evolved exclusively around the horse industry.  Just up the road a scant three miles from Tamarian Farms, the World Equestrian Center is fast becoming the hub of prestige equestrian events and competitions and a mecca for horse lovers of any discipline and level, and the Ocala CEP is a supportive and collaborative partner in ensuring the continued prosperity of the industry with its Equine Initiative program.

Community Commitment

Most of all, it’s the Ocala community that makes this a truly special place. From the farriers to the veterinarians to the trainers, breeders, riders, and farmers, there’s a shared sense of responsibility to develop, strengthen, and protect this rewarding and fascinating life we have for the next generations into the future.
